In his recent ‘War on Waste’ campaign Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall raise the issue of coffee cup waste. It seems that just 1% of coffee cups in the UK are actually recycled at all. The problem is that ‘paper’ cups are not simply made of paper. The cup also includes a layer of polythene which means the cup cannot be easily recycled.

Turns out, there are only 2 recycling centres in the UK that are geared up to process these type of cups. Most of them end up being incinerated rather than being recycled, over 2.5 billion a year!
