Uncover the Wonders of Romney Marsh
The Romney Marsh Visitor Centre offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s natural and social history, providing opportunities to discover, explore, and learn about its unique landscape. Located within an 11-hectare nature reserve, Romney Warren, this area is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its rich biodiversity and ecological significance.
Romney Warren Nature Reserve
The reserve boasts dune grassland rich in special flora, mosses, and lichens, along with seasonal ponds that are home to nationally significant populations of Great Crested Newts and Great Silver Beetles. Other remarkable species include rare medicinal leeches, as well as diverse dragonfly and damselfly species, making it a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists alike.
Visitor Centre Transition
Currently, the Visitor Centre is undergoing a transition as Folkestone and Hythe District Council works to identify the right organisation to take over the lease. Despite this period of change, the importance of preserving and celebrating the Romney Marsh’s unique landscape remains a priority.
St. Thomas Becket Church, Fairfield
A standout feature of Romney Marsh is the iconic St. Thomas Becket Church in Fairfield. Dating back to the late 12th century, this tiny, isolated church sits in a serene field crisscrossed with dykes and grazed by sheep. Originally built with a wooden frame and wattle-and-daub walls, the church was restored in the 18th century when its walls were replaced with brick. Inside, visitors will find a pristine 18th-century interior featuring a white-painted triple-decker pulpit, box pews, and oval text boards—a stunning testament to its historical significance.
